Men's Prayer Beads and Bracelet Set, Antique Cypress from Toji Temple's Keigamon Gate, Mandala Carving, Limited Edition

A rare prayer beads and matching bracelet set carved from reclaimed cypress salvaged during the restoration of the Keigamon Gate at Toji Temple (Kyoogokokuji), a UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyoto founded in 796 and entrusted to the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in 823. For 1,200 years the Keigamon Gate has stood at the temple's northeast corner, originally serving as a ceremonial gate for imperial envoys.

Each bead is carved with the Sanskrit character and name of one of the 21 Buddhas of the three-dimensional mandala that took Kukai ten years to complete, with the carvings finished in gold leaf. The set includes both a full prayer bead strand and a matching bracelet made from the same reclaimed wood, presented in a paulownia box bearing the temple's seal. Limited to 120 sets.
