Freshly split, the wood is egg-yellow; on contact with air it turns blue, and finally settles into a calm ash-brown tone. Normally reserved for fine architectural decoration and craftwork, here it has been cut into beads and hand-finished by Kyoto artisans into men's prayer beads. Wood beads such as this grow more comfortable in the hand and richer in color and luster the more they are used, and are notably light and never cold to the touch compared to stone.
